The Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence was founded in 2010 as an innovative partnership between Presbyterian Day School (PDS), The University of Memphis, and the Martin Family Foundation. Our mission is to develop outstanding teachers through our Residency Program, New Teacher Network, Annual Conference, and other professional learning workshops and seminars throughout the year.
Located in Memphis on the campus of PDS, the Martin Institute provides world-class professional development for teachers and administrators who are eager to develop classrooms centered on critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and brain-based research.
Through our conferences and seminars, the Martin Institute unites public, private, parochial, and charter school educators reaching over 3000 educators since its inception.
Drawing on the research and ideas of leading educational thinkers and child development experts, our programs blend theory with practical application, including the opportunity for teachers to observe, network, and/or develop their craft.
Scholarship assistance for educators is offered for most Martin Institute events thanks to the help of philanthropic donors.
The Martin Institute Board of Directors provides strategic oversight and direction. The Board consists of educational leaders from public and private schools, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, philanthropists, and educational leaders from Presbyterian Day School and the University of Memphis.
The Martin Family
The Martin Institute was established by Brad Martin and his family.
Mr. Martin is Chairman of RBM Venture Company, his family investment company. He served for nearly 20 years as an executive of Saks Incorporated and retired as Chairman and CEO in 2007.
"Investing in the preparation and development of teachers has always been a hallmark of PDS. The work of the Institute is designed to support that effort at PDS through innovative programs and resources for PDS teachers and others in the community who want access to world-class professional development right here in the Memphis community." - Brad Martin
