A Second Long Rotation: Back to PDS

Today, the residents begin their second, longer rotation of field experience.  After visiting classrooms of all levels throughout PDS last Friday, Bailey and Kara have found it best to return to their third grade friends at Presbyterian Day School to learn and grow and gain invaluable teaching experience.  The residents will be with these classes until their next extended placement, which begins on October 20th.

“I Feel so Good!”: A Placement at Promise Academy

7:25 a.m., school-wide morning meeting:

“Promise Academy, how do you feel?!”

“I feel sooo good!  The promise is in me!  The promise is in me!”

I don’t need my daily gallon of coffee (no cream or sugar, please) at Promise Academy.  No way, not with this early morning wake-up, shake-up tradition.  The folks at Promise know how to get up, get moving, and get going.

Quote of the Day - September 9, 2014

Today the residents, Laura, and Steve Hearn, the Chairman of The Martin Institute Board, visited Cornerstone Prep in the Binghampton community of Memphis, where the first sight we stumbled upon was a quick rehearsal for tomorrow’s arrival of Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education.

Week Two, Day One, Minds Blown

The Martin Institute kicked off the second week of our school site visit blitz reuniting with some old friends and making new connections at Hutchison School.  It would be an understatement to say that today’s visit with the girls of the Early Childhood, Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools was “good,” or “great,” or “wonderful.”  We had another awesome day touring another awesome school and observing more awesome instruction.

It’s a Girls’ World

Today we’re hanging out with the ladies of St. Mary’s Episcopal School’s Lower School! Moss Hall is the absolute coolest.

St. Mary’s is a school for girls aged two to twelfth grade.  Nestled in a group of buildings new and old in an East Memphis neighborhood, St. Mary’s was founded in 1847 and is deeply rooted in its history and traditions.  With ballet as a staple course for all students, it is obvious to us that this is a school centered on female-focused, holistic instruction for the entire learner.  Students are grown into women equipped to think creatively, responsibly, honestly, and collaboratively.  It is, without a doubt, a girl’s world at St. Mary’s Lower and Early Childhood Schools, and we’re loving the chance to live in it!

Quote of the Day - September 4, 2014

In conversation with Lytia Reese, principal of St. Augustine Catholic School in Memphis,

“Poverty has nothing to do with race, or ethnicity, or money.  It is a universal concept, a global issue; it speaks to a lack of resources.”

The Thing is Not the Thing: Bodine School

Kara and I spent the morning at Bodine School — an independent school that provides individualized, different learning for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.  This small school is tucked away in residential Germantown, Tennessee and immediately presents itself with a modern, friendly, and inviting atmosphere.  The exterior of the school was the perfect predictor of all that Kara and I would discover inside.
