Using productive struggle to build better problem solvers.

This workshop explores formative assessment in the context of a mathematics class. Uncover opportunities for effective questioning and strategies to detect and advance student thinking. By instantly viewing student data, you’ll learn how to respond to student results and the teacher moves that push and probe student thinking.

We’ll also examine how to use data in innovative ways to improve the results of standardized tests. Join us as we discuss ways that data gathered from students can be used to inform our instruction.

Facilitator: Jeff McCalla

Jeff McCalla teaches mathematics at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. Jeff graduated from Wheaton College and received his Master’s degree from the University of Memphis. In 2011, he got to meet President Obama and the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan when he was given the Presidential Award of Excellence for Science & Mathematics Teaching. Jeff is also a T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology) instructor for Texas Instruments. He has authored two books for Wiley Publishing, TI–84 for Dummies and TI-Nspire for Dummies.
